Youth Leadership Council

The Youth Leadership Council (YLC) makes up the heart of the coalition. Here, youth get involved in the South Sacramento community with planning and coordinating fun activities. The council mostly consists of high school students with a few in college/university and some in middle school. The majority of students involved come from Hiram Johnson and West Campus high schools.

YLC members are challenged to be creative, take on leadership roles and encouraged to actively participate in giving back to the community. The experience they receive while attending national conferences, trainings and workshops is highly valuable. Youth interact with community members, artists, activists, business people, elected officials and other youth from Sacramento. Through collaboration and support from the coalition members, youth have made a difference in their own lives as well as others.

Multi-media and art projects are the primary focus for the YLC members. They learn about film and editing, wide array of art styles, as well as hands-on experience in video/audio production, electronic newsletters and multiple forms of social media.

YLC meetings occur weekly. They meet every Tuesday at the George Sim Community Center, from 4:30 to 6:00pm. The Youth Coordinaor leading the YLC is Staphonya Cabrellis. For more information, please contact Staphonya at
